Moreover, we must examine the capability of the youth to confront challenges beyond their comfort zones, the potential role of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) through its elective conference, and the influence of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in fostering the desired change. Finally, we explore the value proposition of the youth in modern-day Africa.
The African youth encounter daunting economic challenges as they aspire for a brighter future. These challenges encompass high unemployment rates, limited access to quality education, and scarce entrepreneurial opportunities. Despite progress in various regions, these obstacles continue to hinder the prospects and aspirations of the youth.
Youth protests have played a pivotal role in catalysing democratic change in Africa. The 1976 Youth Protests in South Africa, the Arab Spring, and the #EndSARS campaign in Nigeria serve as notable examples of how young people harnessed their collective power to demand social and political transformations. The latter protests, namely, Arab Spring and #EndSars utilized social media platforms, mobilized masses, and drew international attention to systemic issues, corruption, and human rights abuses. While the outcomes varied across countries, these movements undeniably influenced political discourse, increased public awareness, and highlighted the importance of youth inclusion in decision-making processes.
It is against these historical movements such as #FeesMustFall, #ArabSpring, and the Nigerian #EndSARS campaign, that it is essential for the youth of Zimbabwe to rise up and fight for the change they desire in their country. Zimbabwean youth grapple with numerous challenges, including high unemployment rates, limited access to quality education, political instability, economic hardships and a failing healthcare system.
In recent years, South Africa as a neighbouring country, has witnessed a rise in tensions and concerns regarding the influx of Zimbabwean migrants. This sentiment is often fuelled by issues related to service delivery challenges and high unemployment rates. A strain on resources and public services, coupled with the local population’s own struggles, has created a sense of resentment and competition for limited resources. This unfortunate situation further highlights the urgent need for Zimbabwean youth to fight for change within their own country, addressing the root causes of economic hardships and political instability that compel their migration in the first place. They must come together, transcending differences and divisions, to build a united front against the challenges they face. By organizing peaceful protests, engaging in civil discourse, and leveraging social media platforms, they can amplify their voices and draw attention to the urgent need for change.
With elections taking place in August, the youth of Zimbabwean have an opportunity to go to the polls and elect leaders that they can hold accountable and demand transparency in governance from. By advocating for democratic reforms, promoting human rights, and fighting against corruption, they have a chance to create a more inclusive and equitable society. They can leverage technology to mobilize, disseminate information, and rally support for their cause. Social media platforms provide a powerful tool for organizing, raising awareness, and gaining international solidarity.
Today’s African youth demonstrate a remarkable capability to engage beyond their comfort zones to confront the challenges that frustrate them. Through social media activism, participation in advocacy groups, and involvement in civil society organizations, they express their determination to challenge the status quo. The youth leverage technology to amplify their voices, raise awareness, and mobilize for collective action. This engagement transcends national boundaries, fostering a sense of solidarity among African youth and strengthening their capacity to effect change.
In South Africa, the Freedom Fighters (EFF) play significant roles in driving the change that young people hope to see. The ANCYL, through its elective conferences, also aims to provide a platform for youth leaders to shape policy agendas and advocate for youth empowerment. The EFF, with its influence across the continent, champions economic transformation, social justice, and youth-related issues. Both organizations embody the aspirations of young people and strive to address the economic challenges faced by African youth. Through this and the ability to leverage technology, the youth of Zimbabwe can be drivers of change and change the trajectory of the country.
